A Local's Motorcycle Tips August 3, 2023 ![]() Local motorcycle enthusiasts have spent numerous hours riding through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills. Here are their top 5 tips biking tips: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO RIDE? As with many other outdoor activities in Custer, the best riding is in the morning and early evening. By getting an early (or late) start, you're more likely to spot wildlife and also enjoy the open road as less people travel during those hours. The weather can be cooler in the morning and evening so a light jacket is also recommended. WHAT ARE THE BEST ROUTES IN THE BLACK HILLS? The southern region of the Black Hills offers many great rides. The Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park is a favorite with locals and riders from around the country. It's an easy ride that provides plenty of opportunities to take pictures of the wildlife and experience the natural beauty of Custer State Park. Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway are other great routes that weave through Custer State Park. Wind through granite spires, across pigtail bridges and through rock tunnels with views of Mount Rushmore National Monument. If you're riding on the northern edge of the Black Hills, Vanocker Canyon and the Spearfish Canyon Byway are routes that you will want to check out. WHY VISIT CUSTER? A motorcycle-friendly and affordable community, Custer is a must-stop on your next ride in the Black Hills. The central location of Custer allows you to be minutes, not miles from some of the best routes in the region. Enjoy local stays, shopping and dining with regional fare. WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT RIDING IN THE HILLS? One of the things that many riders new to the Black Hills area are unaware of are the sharp curves, and there are a lot of them! The shoulders are not always paved, so be sure to stay in the lane and veer from the shoulder. To ensure the most enjoyable riding experience, go the suggested speed limit (or below it) and take in the beautiful scenery. WHAT ABOUT WILDLIFE? Custer State Park is home to over 1,300 free-roaming buffalo, which means having a close-up experience with wildlife is a definite possibility. Brian and Janet suggest keeping your distance from the buffalo as they are easily spooked and can be aggressive, especially during rutting season and if calves are present. | Holidays in the Hills November 22, 2023 ![]() 45th Annual Studebaker& Packard Car and Truck Show August 28, 2023 ![]() A Local's Motorcycle Tips August 3, 2023 ![]() Pickleball Is Growing In Custer!
